According to the 2019 annual report of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), cotton produced by chartered BCI farmers accounts for 22% of global cotton production.
BCI retailers and brand members purchased more than 1.5 million tons of BCI cotton in 2019, a 40% increase from 2018 and a new high. This sends a clear signal to the market that better cotton is becoming a sustainable mainstream commodity. BCI cotton sales accounted for 6% of global cotton production.
According to the 2019 report, BCI cotton was grown in 23 countries in 2018/19. Farmers with BCI licenses produced 5.6 million tons of BCI cotton, enough to make about 8 billion pairs of jeans, and everyone in the world has one.
BCI cotton now accounts for 22% of global cotton production. By the end of the year, BCI had a total of 1,842 members in 5 member categories, an increase of 29% over 2018.
