China’s share of European and American apparel imports declines in the first three quarters of 2020

The apparel imports of EU-27 countries plummeted in the first three quarters of 2020, and China’s market share and the proportion of various varieties dropped significantly.

Bangladesh’s share of EU knitwear imports reached 29.7 percent, and China dropped to 27.2 percent. Among woven garments, China’s share was 33.5 percent, Bangladesh’s share was 20.8 percent, Bangladesh’s share of EU T-shirt imports exceeded 50 percent, and China’s share was only 8.1 percent.
 
The unit price of China’s knitted garments exported to the European Union was stable, and the woven garment series rose by 15.2 percent. Chinese pullovers rose 1.9 percent, while Bangladesh fell 7.9 percent.
 
Due to the depreciation of the lira, the prices of many Turkish products exports have remained stable and their market share in the EU has increased.
 
U.S. apparel imports recovered for the second consecutive month in November 2020. Imports from China, Vietnam and Cambodia increased, and unit prices fell year-on-year. Compared with the previous year, U.S. apparel imports in November increased by 9.5 percent year-on-year, and decreased by 4.7 percent year-on-year in terms of import value.
 
From January to November 2020, U.S. apparel imports volume fell by 17.5 percent year-on-year, and imports value fell by 24 percent. In November, U.S. apparel imports volume to China fell by 14.9 percent, after increasing by 11.2 percent in October.
 
In November, the unit price of U.S. apparel imports fell by more than 20 percent year-on-year, while the volume and value of imports from Vietnam decreased by 24.4 percent and 13.5 percent year-on-year. From January to November, Vietnam accounted for 19.8 percent of U.S. apparel imports and China’s 23.7 percent. In the same month, U.S. apparel imports from India continued to recover. Imports from Bangladesh fell by more than 10 percent year-on-year, and the volume and value of imports from Cambodia increased by 24.5 percent and 17.8 percent year-on-year.
