Europe launches textile waste recycling program

In recent years, the fashion industry has paid more and more attention to the concept of sustainable development, and many brands and fashion organizations have focused on consumers’ demand for sustainable development.

The Euratex recently launched an innovative textile waste recycling program ReHubs. The ReHubs has two parts. The first is to establish five textile waste recycling and processing centers in the European Union to reduce the environmental hazards of textile waste.

This will be a very large project. It will involve five EU countries, namely Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy and Spain. These countries will each establish a textile waste recycling and processing center to speed up the recycling and treatment of textile waste on a large scale.

The Euratex hopes that these centers will be able to recycle and process up to 48 million to 55 million tons of textile waste in the EU within five years.

The second part of the ReHubs focuses on the recycling of textile waste, with the aim of establishing a new market for second-hand textile raw materials in Europe. Because many of the large amounts of textile waste recycled in Europe every year are incinerated and landfilled, if more textile technologies can be developed to recycle these textiles, then incineration and landfill can be reduced. At present, the Euratex is still looking for partners to help implement the second part of the plan, so the specific implementation time has not been disclosed, but if the plan is successful, European countries will have more than one million tons of textiles waste materials can be recycled each year.
