Uzbekistan exports a small amount of cotton

According to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Uzbekistan will plant 980,000 hectares of cotton in 2020/2021, with an estimated cotton production of 670,000 tons, and exports expected to remain at a very low level. This is due to the government’s efforts to develop the domestic textile industry and increasing the production of high value-added yarn and cloth.

According to industry insiders, Uzbekistan’s cotton consumption is expected to be 600,000 tons in 2020/2021, and only a small amount of cotton is exported. With the increase in investment and expansion of the domestic textile industry, the country’s cotton consumption and yarn exports will continue to increase in the future. Uzbekistan may continue to export small amounts of cotton in the next few years.

According to statistics, Uzbekistan’s exports of cotton yarn, textiles and garments reached USD 1.6 billion in 2018, and are expected to reach USD 2 billion in 2020, which is slightly lower than the government’s target because exports have been affected by the pandemic. At present, Uzbekistan textiles are mainly exported to the CIS countries. Countries that import Uzbekistan cotton such as China and Russia are now the main buyers of Uzbekistan yarn and textiles.
