U.S. ends special treatment for Hong Kong

On June 29th local time, the U.S. Department of Commerce official website issued a statement saying that it had ended special treatment for Hong Kong, including the suspension of export license exemptions, and was conducting a differential treatment assessment.

U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo announced on the 29th that the United States would stop exporting controlled defense to Hong Kong, and would impose the same restrictions on U.S. defense and dual-use technologies to Hong Kong as it does for China mainland. The British “Financial Times” commented that the move was only symbolic because, according to data from the U.S. State Department, last year the United States only shipped USD 1.4 million worth of controlled defense to Hong Kong.
