General situation of national cotton yarn imports from Jan. to Dec., 2016

Imports of cotton yarn continued to decline
There was a downturn trend in inquiry, turnover and output quantity of imported cotton, so the import of cotton yarn continued to decline since the end of the previous year. From January to December of 2016, it still maintained the downturn trend, a fall of 19.5%. The import quantity of January decreased by 25.9%, of February fell by 6.6%, and of March and April continuously declined by 23%. The single-month rise was 8.3% with imports of 202 thousand tons. The import price of cotton yarn kept downward, and the average price was $2.6 / kg, a fall of 4.2 percentage points.   
 
Vietnam yarn was still favored          
China’s cotton yarn market has been influenced by coarse yarn of Pakistan and medium-high count yarn of Vietnam, India, Indonesia. In recent years, a large number of enterprises invested in Vietnam and the imports from Vietnam has been continuously increased. Affected by the overall environment, the growth has been significantly narrowed since the end of previous year to the beginning of last year. However, it was in a powerful return from March, April and May, with the value of 25.9%, 21.7% and 20.9% respectively. So Vietnam was still China’s largest sources of imports of cotton yarn. Total imports from Vietnam from January to December of 2016 amounted to 625 thousand tons, up by 24.3%, which accounted for 31.7% of total imports. The imports from India was in negative growth from December of the previous year, and the 2016 annual imports registered to 416 thousand tons of cotton yarn, a fall of 40.8% over the year earlier, which accounted for 21.1% of the total. Imports from Pakistan has been decreased from October of 2015, and the imports of the year 2016 amounted to 389 thousand tons, down by 28.1%.        
 
In the remaining ten largest sources of imports, expect China’s imports from the United States up by 3.3%, the quantity of imports from Indonesia, Uzbekistan and South Korea fell by 3.3%,20.2% and 32.5% respectively.
 
Imports of cotton yarn of Shanghai and Hunan increased
 
From Jan. to Dec., 2016, there were 10 province with cotton yarn imports more than 20 thousand tons. Among them, the imports of Shanghai has increased 4.8 percentage points over the same period of the previous year, ranking the third. The imports of Hunan was still in a substantial increase, with the value of 38 thousand tons, a great increase of 60%, ranking the ninth. Imports of Shandong province amounted to 267 thousand tons, a decrease of 4.1%, ranking the fourth. Imports of Guangdong reached to 544 thousand tons, a fall of 15.5%, ranking the first; imports of Zhejiang reached to 332 thousand tons, down by 18%, ranking the second. The growth of Anhui province decreased by 13.6%, while Jiangsu, Fujian and Beijing saw a large decrease of 24.4%, 25% and 50.2% respectively.
 
The general trade accounted for 78.9% of the total imported cotton yarn with the value of 1.557 million tons, down by 12.7%; while processing trade occupied for 18.4%, with imports of 363 thousand tons, a fall of 27.1% over a year earlier.
