According to Wu Minling, chairman of the Burmese Garment Association, with the lifting of the relevant restrictions on the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU countries have begun to negotiate on clothing orders, and are expected to receive orders in June. It’s a good prospect for Myanmar’s garment industry after more than two months of pandemic, and also good news for 600,000 garment workers.
Affected by the pandemic, Burmese garment factories faced difficulties in layoffs, salary cuts and production suspension. The EU market accounts for 65% of Burmese apparel processing, that is, 65 out of 100 ready-made garments enter the EU market. In recent years, EU orders have increased year by year, with a growth rate of 30% per year. The export volume in the first six months of the 2019/20 fiscal year was USD 2.3 billion, an increase of more than USD 200 million over the same period last year.
