Comments from the judges

After the catwalk, the on-site judges commented on the finals of the competition.

Liu Yong, the “CFA - Top Award” designer and associate professor of Wuhan Textile University

The deepest feeling for me in this competition is that it is not easy for designers to show their ideas and concepts in a limited set of garments. While designing a work, the designer must consider not only the combination of technology and art, but also the selection of raw materials and the matching of colors. Designing a set of works is actually a test of the comprehensive ability of the designer.

In this competition, the students' works are innovative and inspiring, while the professional players present their profound design skills. I suggest that players should pay attention to the overall performance of serialized works in the future design, and constantly improve their abilities in this regard.

Guo Ruiping, Professor of Beijing Fashion Institute, Director of China Knitwear Design and Development Center, and Founder of brand “DUXI”

As a judge of the competition for many years, the most profound feeling of the competition is that it is getting better year after year. Compared with previous editions, the works of this edition attach more importance to fashion sense, the overall matching, as well as the performance of materials and crafts. From the work itself, it is more complete than the previous ones.

I believe that design itself is a process of resource integration and innovation. In the future design, the players who wish to participate in the competition will have a broader vision, a more solid foundation, and a greater focus on local culture and personal accumulation.

Huang Gang, founder of brand “HUANG GANG” and China Top Ten Fashion Designer

I believe that the theme of this competition "The Tides" is very compatible with the local cultural connotation of Haiyang. The contestants' works have interpreted this theme from different asptcs, and they are creative in the design process, details and color. In particular, the players' understanding of the knitting process, the bold attempt of material matching, the analysis and refinement of fashion trends, as well as the details of the layout design are in place, showing somewhat improvement than those of the previous editions.

I suggest that in the future the designers should strengthen training in the overall matching. Fashion design is an expression of lifestyle. When designing fashion styles, we must also pay attention to the details such as bags, jewelry, hats, glasses and other accessories.

Wang Ying, design director of Beijing Snow-lotus Cashmere Co., Ltd.

The contestants of this competition brought me a lot of surprises and shocks. As a judge from company, I would like to emphasize that in the evaluation of the competition, creativity is one focus. In this competition, many of the patterns, the color matching and the fluidity of the silhouette can reflect the creativity and ideas of the players.

Liu Yanjun, founder of brand “JUNNE” and well-known independent knitting designer

I am very touched by todays event, because I am also a designer from this kind of competition. To my mind, designing is difficult, for the reason that designers not only have to design and make clothes, but also need to make their own fabrics, so it is necessary to repeatedly refine the  process, yarn, etc., even to overlap some design in the process.

In this competition, I can see that so many young and emerging designers can come up with their own different perceptions of the single category of knitting. I hope to see more original designs in many knit brands in the future.
